Ein Tag in der Gemeinde Mertert

Langsur

After breakfast, we set off on our bikes from the German-Luxembourgish Tourist Information Office, where you can also hire bikes. Our brightly colored building is hard to miss and yet many people don't know what it's all about. So please don't just pass by but come in - it's well worth a visit.

By now everyone is equipped with a bike and our first stop is at the aquarium in Wasserbillig. Here we can marvel at fish from all five continents in their natural environment.

Impressed by this underwater world, we cycle leisurely along the River Sûre to Moersdorf, enjoying the peace and quiet along the way and allowing our senses to fully immerse themselves in nature and the landscape.

Once we arrive in Moersdorf, we use the pedestrian bridge to get to the German side. From here, we head downstream back to our starting point in Wasserbilligerbrück.

We return the bikes we borrowed from the German-Luxembourg tourist information office and walk over the border bridge to the "Spatz". Even if we don't yet see the ducks and swans, of which there are plenty here, we can hear their cheerful chatter by NOW at the latest. Here, where the Sûre flows into the Moselle, is the lowest point in the east of Luxembourg and also the official start of the Sûre Cycle Path.

We treat ourselves to a quick selfie in front of the huge mosaic, which depicts a sundial with the watercourses and cantons of Luxembourg, and stroll on past the landing stages for boats and ships and the ferry terminal to the original sculptures of the fisherman.

We continue past the jetty to the train station. The graffiti on the walls of the railway underpass is certainly worth a photo.

From here, we can now choose whether to continue by train or bus to Mertert.

After a few minutes, we arrive in Mertert and slowly but surely one or two of us start to feel hungry. Good for those who had the foresight to pack their rucksacks with provisions, as the park in Mertert is the perfect place for a picnic.

Well fortified, we now set off to explore the small loop (3.2 km) of the Mertert cultural trail and encounter the most important places of the past, historical buildings or sights and learn about their significance along the way. Start and finish is the church.

Once back, a glance at the clock shows that there is still enough time to make a detour to the Mertert waterfall. If you fancy some cool photos, please come along. Don't worry, the waterfall is within easy walking distance and the outward and return journey is less than 2 km.

A successful day comes to an end and by now everyone should have noticed that our municipality of Mertert-Wasserbillig is surrounded by three! rivers, so to speak! Amazing!

There are also plenty of leisure activities for children and young people:
